Ty Segall Instore Performance
August 12th, 2010Although Revolver Records has been host to countless performances of local and touring bands, Thursday August 5th saw the first “official instore” performance by Goner Records artist Ty Segall. Long gone are the days of Ty performing as a one-man band and he showed that with his enthusiasm that came through in his performance (Ty apologized afterward for the lack of energy after driving in the heat all day but after his performance I can tell you there was no lack of energy at all).
The thirty or so fans who came out for the matinee performance were treated to 8 songs of pure lo-fi garage intensity. The set was comprised of tracks mostly from his newest LP, Melted which came out this year on Memphis based Goner Records, a great label run by Eric Friedl from the Oblivians. They also featured some tracks from last years album Lemons, as well as at least one track from his self-titled release from 2008. The energy of the show was constant, and I think some of the definite highlights were the performances of Finger and Sad Fuzz from Melted. Both of these songs typified Tys knack for creating hooks in his songs without making them too poppy yet still very catchy. Ty brought along plenty of merch too and we have a new 7″ as well as his back catalogue available at the store now. He also had what has to be my favorite shirt of the year for sale, it said “You Can’t Spell Party Without Ty” all encircling a picture of Cinderella’s castle from Disneyland… awesome.
We loved having Ty and his band come out for the show and judging by how many records they bought I’m pretty sure they had a good time too so thanks to everyone who came out and thanks especially to Ty and his bandmates for playing at Revolver.
